Abstract
Objective: To investigate the influence of the preceding labor just before elective cesarean section on the initiation of the neonatal respiration.

Material and Methods: A study was conducted on 120 newborn infants who were born after elective cesarean section at Chosun University Hospital from January 1, 1999 to November 30, 1999. All cesarean section were performed in pregnant women beyond the gestational age of 36 weeks. The group was divided into group I (oxytocin pretreatment before cesarean section, 43 cases, 35.8%), group II (preexistent spontaneous labor before cesarean section, 24 cases, 20%) and group III (no pretreatment and labor before cesarean section, 53 cases, 44.2%).

Results: 1. Comparing to the Apgar score of 1 minute and 5 minutes among each group, the mean 1 min was 7 points and 5 min¡¯ s was 8 points. Therefore, there was similar distribution in each group. 2. Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome was not developed in any group.

Conclusion: We wish to explain the effect of artificial preceding labor before the elective cesarean section to the initiation of the neonatal resipiration in many articles, but these results are not significant because studied was insufficient in number group.
